Why are we sometimes easily distracted?

We all have an inbuilt attention grabbing part of our brain to protect us as do all animals. We need to have an alarm system to warn us of danger but in our modern life, the major alarm we need when we are sitting at our desks working is to get up and move more often.

I turn outlook and other reminders off for an hour or so when I am working unless I need to make an appointment on time. I make a list of what needs to be done then work through it. I love crossing done things off. This is my response to all the modern distractions vs my need to get things done. I aim to get up and move every hour.
All my life my mind has wandered off when I needed to pay attention. I learned early that if I sit in the back of a room I simply don’t pay real attention and I disappear into my own mind.

When I was in secondary school there was a system where we had a monthly mark reading then everyone moved desks and sat in mark order, so top of the class sat in the back row and the failures and near failures were in the front. As someone who was shortsighted, slightly deaf and very distractible I went from the back row to the front row and back each month. They never changed the system to suit… I was just deemed to be lazy.

My youngest daughter was similar, also short sighted and deaf in 1 ear, and I remember unsuccessfully arguing with her teacher to let him know that she was not the “very average” child he had assessed her to be. She drifted through school until about 2 months before the end of year 12 when she started to do some work and got the 5 As she wanted to get her into Medical School. We are currently all hoping for a similar miracle for my grandson who is in year 12.
The other side of the coin is that people who have suffered trauma are more distractable than the rest of the population. It is called hypervigilance.

Mindfulness training and meditation can be wonderful for many people but are dangerous for those who have had serious trauma because their nervous systems need to be constantly watching for danger.

Our high levels of community anxiety mean that a significant number of people are hypervigilant. This can be treated although meditation is not the universal answer.

I work with trauma because I personally know the incredible difference that proper treatment gives. I had PTSD from my earliest days that was worsened by 3 abusive marriages. My life was transformed, and I love helping others to discover this wonderful change.

Lizzy came to see me for help to reduce her drinking. She had been treated for breast cancer with a double mastectomy leaving her with very ugly and lumpy scars. She was ashamed of her body and was trying to hide it from her husband. Her marriage had become very uncertain.

What had happened to her as an Aussie girl in her early 20s working in London was a massive trauma. She was abducted from the street, imprisoned for 3 days and raped multiple times. She managed to escape thankfully.
Her family gave her no support because they just said "well it’s over now so don't go on thinking about it".
Trauma like that is not stored and put away neatly in the past. It remains current and is held in the tissues of the body.

As I am also a breast cancer survivor who had a double mastectomy, she immediately realised the "I get it". The trust with me was instantly there.

Hypnotherapy helped her to get the relief of finally knowing it is over and she came to love and care for her body again. Her relationship with her husband also healed.

What I do is to help people to get to the root cause of their problems so they can deal with it so they can feel it is over and they were empowered. They they can heal.

Fred owns a busy accountancy practice with very efficient staff and a well run office.

He however he was overwhelmed. He had was taking home his client’s problems leaving him feeling as though he was in a “vortex” or whiriling thoughts and worries. This is classic trauma.

The only way he thought he could cope with this was to drink, which he did at lunchtime, after work and at weekends – in ever increasing amounts.

I used a combination of business coaching around the rule that you “don’t take on the problem if the problem isn’t yours" and added hypnotherapy to break the alcohol habit – job done! Fred is now coping well in his business, has lost weight and no longer drinks. That also saved his marriage which has been on the rocks due to the drinking and general stress overload.

Managers and professionals like accountants, lawyers, doctors and many others are trained in their professions, but the commonsense business management training is often missing. I know because I had to learn this the hard way 20 years ago so I got help from business coaches and consultants that was worth every cent that I spent. and I spent 10 years as a business management consultant before I returned to my true love of getting our minds and bodies to work together.

When trauma happens the memory and the pain is held in all the cells of your body and until it is released that memory is never resolved. The stress and trauma is never over.

Using hypnosis and a special step by step process I help clients to overcome those memories and let the pain and stress go. The change is dramatic.

I truly ‘get” this because this is the process that I used to heal my own PTSD which built up over many years from my earliest childhood, through being bullied as a disabled child and having 3 abusive marriages.

I'll let Sue (not her real name) tell her story

“Yes, I am wise, but it is wisdom born of pain” is a line from Helen Reddy’s song “I am woman” and it is so very true of me. It is also what makes me a very good trauma therapist.

I had the experience of spending many years living with complex PTSD, being disabled as a small child wearing callipers to my waist and dyslexic.

Having had a bad start, I was vulnerable and had abusive marriages plus breast cancer and many broken bones. This is a pattern that I see in so many of my anxiety and trauma clients.

Recovering and letting go of the past gave me the wisdom to truly understand where anxious and traumatised clients are coming from. My absolute passion is helping people who have been bullied and abused to become the stronger, wiser selves they were always meant to be.

As so many of you know, I am fine now. I am stronger and healthier than many people my age and I am very happy. Occasionally something comes up that triggers difficult memories, but I know how to deal with it and I fix it fast.
The lockdown and covid fear in March and April 2020 was difficult for me but I suspect this was the case for many others as well. When the latest lockdown was announced I shouted an expletive 3 times then I felt good and got on with being busy. The expletive was all I needed to let go.

The real purpose of my Escape from Anxiety online program is to give extra training in ongoing resilience.
One of the many extra training courses I did was given by an American Psychotherapist who drummed it home that healing trauma is all about feeling and for it to work the client needs to feel that I feel what they feel. That is so true.
In fact, difficult and traumatic memories are held in the body as feelings, not verbalised and never stored in normal way we store memories.

Anxiety, emotions and feelings are held in our bodies, not in our conscious mind and they need to be treated this way. The problem with the more common cognitive therapy is that it is very slow and if it works at all it is because it is about gradually desensitising the conscious memories as it “pendulums” and keeps revisiting the pain. I won’t do this. I help you to let it go without revisiting.

Stress, anxiety and trauma are not your fault but it is your responsibility to heal.

Healing does not return us to who and how we used to be before the trauma.  No-  we become someone stronger, wiser, kinder.

And in changing our lives we are able to affect our families and communities in a good way.

Escape from Anxiety is a guided 6-week program and priced to make it accessible. It  costs less than a coffee and a bun each week.

The program helps you to understand and manage those unconscious beliefs that control your life.  You will learn how to change them so that YOU can heal and become that person you are meant to be, a much stronger, wiser and kinder. And I will be with you all the way, to make sure you reach a place where you are able to heal.

I am passionate about helping people to use their minds to heal themselves though hypnotherapy.  This course teaches you to understand the origins of your anxiety and how to change this so that you CAN Escape from the stress, anxiety and depression  stress that happens in all our lives.

And we do this without going over and over issues because this just increases your pain.

I am with you all the way to answer questions and hold out my hand to help you across difficult areas.
