Buddha said that “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future or not to anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.”
And Thomas Jefferson, one of the American Founding Fathers asked “How much pain have worries that never happened have cost us?”
I see so many clients who are locked in worries and guilt about the past and anxiety about the future. One of the real constants between the clients I help at the Cancer Care Centre is the amount they are worrying about things completely unrelated to getting healthier.
So here are some questions for you –
Why do you worry?
Does worrying change things that happened in the past?
Does worry and anxiety help you to enjoy living NOW?
Does worry and anxiety help you to cope in the future?
Certainly anxiety and worry stop you from living your life with ease
And lack of ease in your life leads directly to dis-ease. And there is nothing new here. People have known this for thousands of years.
I also know that when we are worried and anxious, many of us insulate ourselves (with fat) against these possible problems – and often they are only possible problems that don’t even happen.
So does worrying about how you will cope without cigarettes, or alcohol or some other crutch actually help you? … or is it better to relax and let go.
