Lost productivity and working time in Australia directly caused by stress and anxiety in business totals 100,000 hours every year (a recent, 2018 study by Medibio).
The immediate loss of work time can also strain on professional relationships and limited career progression for the anxious individuals, while their employers take a hit to lost work time, higher rates of sick leave and reduced productivity.
We spend a third of our lives at work, so it is no surprise that it’s a prime environment for anxiety. For small businesses this can be much worse because small business owners don’t really clock off in so many cases.
The modern nature of work, with competing deadlines, constant pressure, those mobile phones giving an “always-on” mentality can be overwhelming for people suffering from anxiety and even cause the anxiety.
When people are overwhelmed two things happen:
- their brain automatically triggers the fight, flight, freeze stress response leading to anger, more fear, additional sick leave or they may even freeze and go very slow.
- The other thing is that their memory is affected because the part of the brain that is overwhelmed is the same part that organises memory storage.
These are not deliberate responses and the people involved do not respond well to discipline or additional supervision, which may well exacerbate the situation. The person needs skilled help and this is what I offer.
People often don’t ask for help because they don’t want to disappoint and they are frequently too embarrassed to admit they need help. The thing is that one in three people do suffer from at least one mental health problem in their life so workplaces should be aware of this and alert to allow people to get help.
I am specialist stress and anxiety practitioner using a hypnotic treatment, TRTP, that allows an overwhelmed person to return calm and safe in only 3-4 sessions. It is very fast and gentle and does not involve going consciously back over stressful thoughts or situations.
Business stress and anxiety can be worse at this time of the year because of the pressures to complete so much by June 30th and often people are so busy they postpone treatment until things calm down a little often causing serious health outcomes.
