The problem with childhood anxiety is that is affects the developing brain. It actually changes how the brain develops and the child grows up with a slightly different physical response to stress and anxiety. This is the reason why something that is traumatising for one person may not be traumatising for another.
So why does this happen?
In earlier newsletters I have explained how the stimuli or stresses that come into your brain are “catalogued” in the hippocampus before the memories can be stored. When too much is happening either at once or overtime you can become overwhelmed. This triggers the fight, flight or freeze response which I have previously described as ‘the security guard” protecting.
Where very small children and even unborn children are overwhelmed by trauma either to themselves or to their mothers, the response can affect the growth and development of the child brain and especially their brainstem.
Stress at any age triggers the release of cortisol which shuts off the way the hippocampus functions and adrenalin increases the way the amygdala functions and lays down memories which are not integrated because the hippocampus has shut down.
When this happens to small children it is much more serious because the actual growth of these vital parts of the brain stem is affected. As the child grows he or she is more susceptible to stress, anxiety and trauma. The child is more likely to be bullied because bullies unfortunately are good at recognising that response.
So childhood anxiety is a huge problem. We need to look after our kids and we also need to look after ourselves.
You can escape from anxiety using deep hypnosis and a bottom up approach. The more usual top down “talking therapies” of counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy attempt to use your logical conscious mind to heal yourself which so often re-traumatises and can take months or years if it works at all.
My bottom up approach is deeply relaxing using your unconscious mind to resolve your problems gently and allow the brain stem to repair itself using the brains wonderful natural neural plasticity.
If you suffer from anxiety, you stress easily, are very reactive, or quick to anger just stop suffering and come and see me for help.
If you live outside Adelaide, I can help using online video conferencing which works for anyone with a tablet or computer plus an internet connection.
